Understanding Sensory Profiles
What are Sensory Profiles?
Everyone has a unique sensory profile influencing how they interact with and make sense of the world. Sensory profiles vary widely from person to person and across the senses.
Types of Sensory Processing Styles
Sensory Seekers
Individuals who actively seek out sensory input, often through physical activity or intensive sensory experiences. Sensory seekers may enjoy activities like jumping, moving, bright lights and listening to loud music.
Sensory Avoiders
Individuals who are sensitive to certain sensory experiences and actively avoid situations or environments that trigger discomfort. They may be bothered by busy, noisy, and bright environments or certain fabrics, smells or textures. They might like bland foods rather than spicy.
Sensory over-responders
Individuals who have strong reactions to sensory experiences, often leading to sensory overload. They may become overwhelmed by crowds, lots of competing noises such as many people talking at once, being touched unexpectedly, or sudden noises.
Sensory under-responders
Individuals who have a dulled response to sensory input and may need more intensive sensory experiences to feel stimulated. They may be unaware of noises, changes to the environment or have difficulty noticing sensory cues.
